Bean-to-cup, portafilter or capsule?

The three types of coffee machine compared, and who each one suits.

Bean-to-cup

Grinds fresh beans, brews and largely cleans itself. Espresso, café crème and, depending on the model, cappuccino at a touch. Ideal for households with several coffee drinkers and anyone who wants no effort. Examples: De'Longhi Magnifica, Philips LatteGo, JURA E series.

Portafilter

You grind, dose and tamp yourself and steam the milk with the wand. More hands-on, but full control over the taste. Models like the Sage Barista Express or Barista Pro have the grinder built in. Examples: Gaggia Classic Evo Pro, Sage Bambino Plus, De'Longhi Dedica.

Capsule

Insert a capsule, press the button: fast, clean and always the same. Cheap to buy, but more expensive per cup than beans. Check the system: Nespresso Original, Nespresso Vertuo, TASSIMO or Bialetti.

In short

  • Comfort and fresh beans: bean-to-cup
  • Espresso as a hobby: portafilter
  • Fast and simple: capsule
